Bartholin Gland Abscess

Five days ago, a pea-sized bump has appeared… it wasn’t painful, just made me a bit uncomfy.  I’m a cystic person and didn’t want to aggravate my condition so I immediately opened my laptop and searched for similar cases online.  Maybe the early symptom was too common because the search results pointed to varied diseases such as boil, dermatofibroma, wart, infected hair follicle, etc.  I then decided to wait until the next day for another symptom or change to occur.

On the second day, the bump has gone bigger and redder and the pain began to increase both in frequency and severity.  From the readings I’ve done, at that point, I was pretty certain that it was a Bartholin Cyst.  My husband became so worried and pleaded me to go see an Ob/Gyn already for proper diagnosis and treatment.  I refused because I was sure the doctor will recommend surgery (based on my readings) and besides WebMD said it would go away with hot baths.

As I’ve learned from medical websites and from the experiences of women who had it, I did sitz baths — as hot as I can stand it at least 3x a day.  The addition of 2 cups epsom salt diluted in the water greatly helped. Some say that a hot compress (very hot one) is as good as a sitz bath, so you can take that option if you don’t always have the privacy to do the baths.  After each sitz bath, I pressed a cotton pad with 5 drops of pure tea tree oil on to the cyst for about 30 minutes. That same day a portion of the skin surrounding the lower part of the cyst peeled off on its own, however, it still didn’t come to a head.  Up to now I cringe at the thought of it.

On the third day, it grew as big as a golf ball.  It was so painful that I couldn’t walk, even barely stand.  The only position that gave me a little relief was to lay on my side.  When I woke up that morning I noticed little red spots similar to measles on my legs and arms.  I usually get those the day after having a fever, and so I thought maybe I had fever during my sleep.  But I was also thinking it might have been an allergic reaction to tea tree oil, so I continued only with the sitz baths that day.

The worst part about this cyst was the fear. I was afraid to go to the doctor, but worried that I couldn’t handle it all by myself.  It was scary and painful, but I was telling myself that God will surely help me go through it.

By the fourth day, the red spots disappeared a bit so I figured it must have really been the tea tree oil.  Indeed, I was allergic to it.  I knew my condition was something serious, but I also knew I had a God who is bigger than ANY disease.  I have been praying fervently, and even prayed with Pastor Benny Hinn while watching his Good Friday Service online.  After praying and crying to the Lord, I felt some relief though the size remained the same.  The Lord touched me, and while it was not instant healing, I knew He was leading me to the right “treatment”. I’ve read a success story on tea tree oil so I went on with the treatment again despite the allergic reaction I would get.  Overnight, I left the cotton pad with 5 drops of pure tea tree oil pressed on the cyst and believed that the abscess will drain the following morning.

As I woke up the following morning, the 5th day, I didn’t feel any pain.  I immediately checked on the cyst and guess what? The abscess has drained itself in the cotton pad! The swelling gradually went down, and the itchiness, I believe, is brought about by the healing process.  I still have a tiny lump but it’s so small I believe it could be gone tomorrow.  It helped a lot that I prayed and read my bible (“O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You have healed me.” –Psalm 30:2) and acted early on the bump.  I thank the Lord for His goodness and faithfulness! :)

My intention is to give you hope instead of fear.  I hope my experience can help those who are currently suffering from this painful disease.  The treatment methods I used might work for you, to some extent, but I found it much more helpful to pray and believe that God will heal you.

    Hello Itsawomanthing,

I have the same issue that you had with the cyst. Where excatly do you apply the tea tree oil…on the outside or inside the libia? Please help me as I am very worried.

Thank you for all your postings.

  15. 15 itsawomanthing Mar 14th, 2012 at 7:19 am

Laura, just put a very little amount in a cotton ball and dab it on the surface of the cyst. Hope you feel better soon.

I too suffer from constantly having them. I currently have one and the antibiotics have stopped the horrible pain but it hasn’t gone down much. I have been praying as I don’t want to have the surgery again. I just purchased tea tree oil so please pray for me. I will keep you posted.

  17. 17 itsawomanthing Apr 4th, 2012 at 10:01 pm

Will be praying for you, Dannessa. And yes, please do keep me posted. May God’s healing hand be upon you.

Does the cyst you have feel deep? I have heard people talk about “bringing it to a head” like a pimple. Mine is fairly large and very much under the skin

  19. 19 itsawomanthing May 16th, 2012 at 7:21 pm

Jackie, mine was not very deep but I know a few women who had BCs that are larger and deeper.

i was wondering how you applied the tea tree oil, did you just do it to the outside skin area or on the opening of the cyst? ive been trying a itmixture of tea tree oil with calamine lotion and it makes my skin burn a bit if i get too close to the opening.

I just had to share. I had Bartholin’s Cysts twice before so I knew from the beginning what I was dealing with. Did the baths but it just kept getting worse. I was praying and reading healing scriptures the other day and came upon Psalm 30:2 and it jumped out at me! I knew that was for me!
Well, 2 more days passed and I’m now confined to the bed as it’s excruciating to walk and even laying down was hard. I’m crying to the Lord asking if He heard me crying out for healing and telling Him how it’s so unbearable and I can’t take it anymore.
And so here I get back on the computer again searching the web and arrived here and got to the part where you mention Ps 30:2. I just cried. He was telling me He has heard me. It’s been many hours since I first read your post and Praise the Lord, I finally have relief. It still hurts in certain sitting positions but I know it’s draining or something because I can finally walk without pain!
Oh what would I do without the Lord!!

  22. 22 itsawomanthing Sep 1st, 2012 at 7:06 pm

Hayley, I applied tea tree oil on the bump itself. You just have to be very careful and make sure you don’t put too much as it can really irritate the skin.

  23. 23 itsawomanthing Sep 2nd, 2012 at 7:11 am

Saph, I was having goose bumps while reading your message. Amen! Indeed, nothing is impossible with the Lord! I will be praying for you… believe that this is the last BC in your life. Thanks so much for sharing.

  24. 24 Saph Sep 4th, 2012 at 9:53 pm

By the evening time, I was fully healed with zero pain!! I will be sharing my testimony on my own blog, too! Maybe it will help someone else – it’s good to know the home remedies available!

And totally unrelated to this, would you mind checking your spam folder to see if my comment ended up there and unspam my comment? All my comments on blogs seem to end up in the spam folder if I fill out the “Website” field.

I also had a BC and yes the Lord is everything that seeks us trough it and i also stumbled to this website while battling my BC and the tea tree oil did help a lot and very thankful for it unfortunately i had to get it drain and it wasn’t a bad process cause eventhough i went troug thr drainage i didnt feel no pain and its rapidly healing and also there’s a pill call penicilin and they sell it at Hispanic stores which you take two by mouth and that will SURELY battle infection and open one and rub it on your cyst and that will help(my mother-in-law which is from ES recommended) and it helped amazingly since its helping healing rapidly. Good luck to every single one of yal and don’t dispair our Lord will always guide us to the right treatment since he knows us so well:)

I suffer with the same ailment and let me tell you, that tea tree oil works! In the past 6 months, I have had my bartholin cyst drained 3 times and it just recently came back. I know the feeling of going to the doctor and the same day watching it grow right back so I thought there has to be something to manage this thing on my own.

Well I read up about the tea tree oil, went to the vitamin store and bought a small bottle of it, like 8 dollars, took a hot sitz bath and dropped a few drops in the water and I felt it begin to tingle immediately. Then within an hour, it started to leak- from where the previous incision had been made before. I thought the incision was closed up but apparently once I dabbed 1 drop on my finger and rubbed it on the outside of the gland, not more than an hour later it started to leak out. I am doing this treatment twice a day since I started yesterday and it continues to leak out and shrink. God is good. Hang in there ladies because this disorder can be quite embarassing and depressing but God is good. Use the hot baths, massage the area, put a wet rag in the microwave for about a minute and let it stay on the gland as long as you can take it, then dab the tea tree oil on it and rest. Its not 100 percent gone but it is leaking now and that’s all that really matters.

ive been dealing with my labial abscess for about a week now. ive gone to the emergency room twice. the first time i was told it was an allergic reaction (which i had a feeling it wasnt) and was prescribed all the wrong medications. a friend recommended tea tree oil and ive been applying it the past 4 days. the abscess seems to be softening up and a purple spot has appeared. im hoping it will leak out soon. i actually went to the hospital again today because it had not improved, and the doctor who saw me this time was upset at the lack of experience and the pointless medications and prescribed antibiotics and gave me a shot. so im praying this thing will go away soon. it is so painful and i havent been to work this week because of it. ive been bed ridden. ive also been doing the hot sitz baths as well with the tea tree oil and now these antibiotics i hope it pops without me having to go back to have it lanced. keep me in your prayers (: i have faith God will help me through this. i was reading online that “boil ease” works very well, if by tomorrow there is no improvement i will probably try that too and keep everyone posted to see if it works. im glad i ran into this, it has given me hope. <3

A BC usually drains on its own with tea tree oil, so yours should rupture soon, Abigail. Will keep you in my prayers.

  32. 32 Abigail Dec 8th, 2012 at 5:01 pm

    thank you so much.

do you know more or less how long it lasts? or how long it takes to rupture? its been exactly one week today since i started experiencing this agonizing pain! >.<

  33. 33 itsawomanthing Dec 9th, 2012 at 10:12 pm

Abigail, mine took 5 days but some women I’ve met online who had BCs before said that it can take up to a week. How much tea tree oil do you put on it and how frequent?

  34. 34 Abigail Dec 16th, 2012 at 2:24 am

it finally came out after i picked it a little bit. it was the most disgusting thing ive ever seen in my life! first thing i did was thank God. the relief was instant. i ended up using natural peices of aloe vera. I would slice it and warm it up for 5 seconds and place it on. It would bring instant relief, and I think it helped it come to a head. What about after care? because there’s a hole after.

Hey, I just wanted to let you all know what worked for me. I just had my second cyst ever. I just got in Monday. I’ve sat in sitz baths for the past 2 days & have been trying to come up with and tried everything. Long story short, I was desperate to get this thing gone. So, my mom was like try some Sea Breeze on it. (Sea Breeze is a facial cleanser that also bring pimples to a head when you let it sit for a minute.) So, I put some Sea Breeze and baking soda (baking soda is said to pull out the pus) on a pantyliner (there was no measuring here, just judgment). Then, I applied a ziplock bag of hot water on it (along w/a pillow so that they wouldn’t be a lot of pressure on it). I did this right before I went to bed at 11pm. I woke up & realized that it didn’t hurt for me to turn over. I went to the bathroom and it had popped! I would suggest wiping w/the Sea breeze first, b/c it may sting/burn. I strategically applied the hot water bag right after I put the pantyliner on just in case it did sting or burn.
